Conway's Life looks only at the eight cells next to a cell. Larger than Life looks at every cell in a square of radius R around it. A dead cell comes alive if the number of live cells in that square lies between Birth min and Birth max; a live cell stays alive if the number lies between Survive min and Survive max. With a large radius the counts run into the hundreds, so the ranges are wide, and the pictures show smooth blobs and slowly moving shapes instead of single cells.
Kellie Evans described this family in 2001. The tick box decides whether a live cell counts itself in its own total. The four presets are parameter sets as I remember them from Evans's catalog: Bosco and Bugs are close cousins, and Bugs is the one named for the small moving creatures it is known for. In my tests from a random start some of them died out or froze quickly, so press Random again or change the start density (a start density near 50 percent worked best). The grid wraps around at the edges.
